The Verge - AI was everywhere at GDC, except for the Games

Arguably the sorta buzz word trend in the business world never existed in gaming. LLMs and generative AI specifically are just yet another new tool that game development could take advantage of but there’s not even much use in how the tools are currently being pitched. Otherwise game development has always used stuff like procedural generation and machine learning. Games have also always gotten hate for using them tastelessly or too much.

I think we’re leaving the buzz word trend as stocks stop surging and investors stop foaming at the mouth at the mention of AI. Consumers themselves have had very mixed (mostly negative (though certain cultures and communities have embraced it)) responses to shoving AI into everything and calling everything AI. A game isn’t going to market “Hey we used GEN AI.” as if that’s going to make it look better. AI Browser sounds better than AI Video Game, and AI Browser doesn’t sound all that good in the first place.

Most likely LLMs will continue to be prevalent in the background, but won’t be pushed as an “AI revolution” in the foreground. Especially when people have started linking it to job losses and environmental concerns.
