Xbox 2025 Layoff Thread (crazy we need one...)

That’s something I think will be impossible, as PD was having dev problems even after CD was brought in to help.

The only thing that could help would be Microsoft selling the studio and the ip to another interested party. Which even if they were interested, I can only see CD buying the IP to make it their own

It would have to be something like what they did with Ninja Gaiden 4, where it’s being developed in secret and then announced and released in the same year.

Basically the Nintendo strategy. At least majority of them, since MP4 was announced a while back and it took this year to finally arrive. Same with Zelda.

It seems they have found publishers. Though I don’t like this didn’t turn out so bad after all. I think maybe Xbox did even help in getting another publisher to foot the bill. As for the Bethesda game they still own the IP and maybe might work on it again or contract it out. I think Xbox might be looking more at projects outside the US that seem much cheaper to manage.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but I found the Xbox One launch to be utterly fantastic with a great selection of games and games like Ryse, Forza 5 showing what the hardware could do .

I do agree with you on never being happier. I haven’t enjoyed gaming so much on my Series X since the OG Xbox days.

My Xbox Series X is more or less on every day. It’s just a shame so many people won’t give the system a chance anymore .

glad to hear they got or a getting funding, not pressing any twitter links though.

Seems unlikely but I wonder if they’d be willing to just license the IP to Crystal Dynamics to finish the game. Have we heard of related layoffs at CD yet?

I very much doubt that. The way I see it this game would have to now undergo the Fable treatment. Maybe like some have said Machine games could easily pick this. Maybe even Ninja theory, sometime ago Playground started a third studio; to help with Fable so they could easily pick up Perfect Dark and considering Joanna Dark is British they might just have the chops for it not to mention the third person angle could be adopted.

When something like this occurs, typically MS would have to pay a built in contract termination fee. I’d imagine that amount would be calculated such that they could keep the studio running for a reasonable time until they could get more funding. Assuming of course they were managing their money properly.

It’s hard to say, we don’t get the details of these contracts very often. It could well be the case that MS just has them begin to contribute to another project, till any existing contract comes to term. We may not know till we see them in the credits of anything from Call of Duty to Halo remake to Fallout NV remaster.

Listening to Xbox Two, Jez seems to also be of the mind that the layoffs have ended up being less thank 1k and mostly focused on things other than rank and file devs.

I haven’t worked in video game development contacts but I’ve worked on others. What you say may happen but I think that would be more for the case of a studio doing support work. The way this would be set up different than hiring contract workers on a year to year basis with contract renewals. This would be more like a construction contract where you hire someone to physically build something so they need to hire people, buy supplies, etc… Both parties would be on the hook if one wants to back out.

This arrangement was not very normal, and as such what you describe may be possible. A lot of time support studios are just contracted by time and not titles, and as such may end up working on a number of games simultaneously. Obviously this isn’t a traditional support studio, so who knows

So I know vgc reported on Mayles and O’Connor leaving Rare.

In the article it did state that it’s yet to be confirmed.

Did we ever get actual confirmation? as all I’ve seen is follow up articles stating it’s true but just using the original VGC article as it’s source.
