Xbox Asks Customers About A Full Return to Console Exclusivity

Yesterday, a new survey appeared for a subset of Xbox users on the Insider Program, presumably among those who Microsoft tracks as having multiple devices. A user sent us the below survey screens, which Windows Central has verified as real.

shit…sorry Jesse ! Don’t shoot me!

Those who went on to bash Gears E-Day are going to make a career by this point.

The Game Pass/multiplatform strategy may not be working out as well as Phil and Satya wanted. But if they try the all exclusives strategy again now, it’s going to fail even worse than it did in the Xbox One generation. :man_shrugging:

It’s not about it working, it’s about getting Xbox back on track. Giving everything away is worse. We have the results of that strategy shift and it wasn’t working, even pushing people away from Xbox. We’re back to square one or square “We told you so”.

Hope that they really bring console exclusivity, if Sony and Nintendo are making this, why Xbox have to be the only one to be different? The console really lost value with this.

And talking about value, if Xbox wants to sell the next generation consoles with $1000 tag price, they need to show that they console is more special than others.

There’s no way they make Minecraft exclusive - they’re not going to remove it from iOS and Android for example as there’s no way they hit 1 billion players if they do so.

Plus stopping content updates on previously purchased games, I’ve no idea how they don’t get sued or have regulators getting involved (or how to manage it from a backend perspective) - but even if they didn’t, there will be endless news stories of little Timmy being sad about his friend being able to play new Minecraft content but he can’t and his mummy and daddy can’t afford a $1000 new Xbox and it’s all big bad Microsoft’s fault as they’re taking away something they’ve already paid for.

It’d be a PR shitshow.

Stopping the spin offs coming to PlayStation I could see happening though…

Wasn’t it Microsoft that decided to drive Xbox off track in the first place. They asked for a margin that drove the platform off a cliff. Exclusivity is fine if they can get those margins otherwise this will go nowhere fast. I do think exclusivity works for Game Pass however I don’t think it works for consoles. No exclusive game is going to move hardware like they expect at over a thousand dollars

At this point I don’t know what is good or bad for the platform, clearly the multiplatform plan did more harm than good for the console. With the current HW prices and availability (Xbox Series X digital is 1000e+ here at the moment) I feel that little will change in terms of sales for the platform but I guess keeping games and important IPs exclusive is a perception thing that will most likely pay up in the future.

I agree I think as they say console exclusive not fully exclusive. They are probably looking at taking the PlayStation and Nintendo of their supported platforms as they go more PC.

The way I see it making a reference Xbox and partnering with the big electronic manufacturers all over the world would be the best bet. Let Samsung, Hisense, TCL, LG and all this big TV makers make their own Xboxes based on a single refence design and OS just like you have with android phones.

To me exclusives are best suited to the form factor. I think hardware are best with hardware features and software and services best with software. Hardware like GPUs for example have their demand driven by their hardware features like power and performance while services like Netflix, Amazon prime Tv, Disney+. HBO and others are driven by their exclusive software content which is why I think exclusive games are more beneficial to driving Game pass than they are to selling consoles.

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying and TBH I don’t know what the “right” answer is supposed to be. I just think that, not only did “business as usual” already not work for the Xbox One, it’s even less likely to succeed now that a lot of gamers will expect the biggest Xbox games to eventually become multiplatform. Plus the fact that external factors are making console hardware impossible for many people to purchase anyway, even if exclusive games did persuade them.

I’ll leave it to Asha and I truly hope she can get Xbox to a place that Microsoft considers healthy. In the meantime Imma just play my video games. :man_shrugging:

The hardware prices and availability was all done by Microsoft because of first the 30% margin of a software company on a hardware division and second the funding of OpenAI to cause the rampacolypse, which they’re still doing.

They should make everything exclusive, even Minecraft. PC and Xbox is enough to keep the plataform going, everything went south when they came with everything is a xbox thing and start putting the games every where. Whether or not this was related to the 30% margins, imo was a big mistakes that made more harm than good.

If they’re serious about rebuilding their platform they know what they need to do. If they’re looking to sell a 1000 dollar console they know what they need to do. Short term pain for long term gain.

Some games exclusive won’t change much. It needs to be an elaborate marketing push that makes the console available globally alongside big third party IP exclusives on top of first party. You know the moves, they know them. It just costs so much for them that I doubt they will consider it, it needs to be an internal cultural shift and ability to take losses for them to take actions that could make a dent.

Yep given Satya’s “we’re done subsidising Xbox” speech I’m seriously doubting Microsoft will stump up the cash to do so (or accept any losses) - I think bringing other manufacturers in is their idea for maybe having a value Helix (as some budget manufacturers who produce electronics already might be able to go cheaper) but I’m not sure how they plan to do exclusives while keeping the bear (Microsoft) off their backs on profits

Dumpster fire of comments on PureXbox- some genius suggesting first party is removed from Game Pass entirely (not just not being Day 1) but replaced with AAA Day 1 third party (failing to realise that would cost far more) and others demanding Xbox pull back from PC too despite that clearly being stated in the questionnaire as not an option…

Does show how varied opinions are though, and that’s just among the hardcore
