There wasn’t boss fights before?

“With Psychonauts 2, we could see the end of our budget coming up, and so we had cut a lot of stuff,” Schafer says. “We had cut our boss fights. Now we are able to put those back in, and we’re like ‘we think people would have noticed if we didn’t have those boss fights.’” https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pcgamer.com/uk/amp/psychonauts-2-still-has-boss-fights-because-of-the-microsoft-acquisition/

Oh wow. That’s pretty cool.

wait Twisted Pixel had a AAA project in development too? I forgot to mention Stormlands…why did they cancel all these projects though? I understand the quality issues with Fable Legends but I guess we’ll never know what was wrong with Press Play or Twisted Pixels projects.

A good watch by Linus tech on raytracing, and if it’s even worth it because of the huge performance demands it puts on the system.

A week or 2 ago I said that if 343 came out and said raytracing wasn’t going to be in infinite at all because of the performance hit I would support it. A couple people in here didn’t like that much.

After watching this vid I 100% stand by that statement. Raytracing causes such a huge hit on performance that I very much question it’s effectiveness at making the image look better.

Yes good raytracing looks better than non raytracing. But good raytracing is even more taxing on the hardware than middling and bad tracing. I think if those resources where used somewhere else to enhance the image quality it would be better spent. Normal gamers don’t even know when raytracing is on.

I agree, RT did nothing for me in the games I tried with it on. I would prefer 4K/60 on Infinty any time of day. Watchdogs legions, for example, was a pretty meh experience with RT. I end up just avoiding RT when the option is available. Of course, it could improve overtime with better tools and all, but for now it doesn’t justify the amount of resources it takes imo.

Agreed. And even if a game is 4K/60 with raytracing I think it would be better if they dumped raytracing and up the image quality in other ways.

Sony is pushing raytracing big time with reflections in puddles.

We are in a transition period from raster based rendering to ray tracing so things will be painful. But it’s a direction we have to move to. If we want a true simulated world we have to move to ray tracing. I know some will hate the compromise but I’m willing to make the compromise.

Starfield not coming this year according to Jscheir

That totally depends what the game does with raytracing. There are very expensive effects and there are things not that much expensive because they are amortised over multiple frames. Nvidias GI solution costs less than 2ms of frame time and looks way better than any other thing in a game where lighting can’t be prebaked :woman_shrugging:

Could you pls share the tweet?

  1. This was a prediction

Hmmm I’m not sure. It does add up with his comments on how a lot will be delayed this year

Ray Tracing like HDR is all about it being properly implemented. Watch Dogs Legion has decent Ray Tracing but Miles Morales Ray Tracing is great in Performance RT mode and probably even better in Visuals mode or whatever it’s called. Rift Apart will also have great Ray Tracing.

The bigger issue is how does the inferior console give me Ray Tracing in Miles Morales and Rift Apart which honestly, have way more going on in the world and on the screen than Halo Infinite does yet this game can’t give me Ray Tracing on the superior console?

343 Industries should at least have Ray Tracing in Halo Infinite for those like me who will play the campaign solo and then just turn it off automatically for those who play co-op.

That is quite an absolute take. Do you know something we don’t?

My bet is if Jason was saying, he probably knows more than we do and it’s not really a prediction, it’s just him saying it as a prediction.

Personally, im staying with March 2022. Have said this since Microsoft acquired ZeniMax and im not changing it.

it was from a reddit AMA

It was a guess

Are you saying 343i should atleast have some form of RT in HI for SeriesX/S? That sounds about fair.

Also, Miles Morales and R&C – may not be a good genres to compare against. I love Insomniac and follow their developer presentations. Usually MP defines the lowest common denominator for games like HI or even BF6. So, unless BF6 is next gen only - BF6 might be the apt comparison there.

Either way, gameplay+story rules. The rest of the tech specs all sound like necessary check boxes to satisfy us before a game releases, and maybe for DF. Once a game is out there - all these will fade into the background. Look at WD Legion: no one talks about it anymore.

A side point - a well implemented SSR, AO, and fixed LightOfDay, and you don’t need a full RT solution there. And that could be done for lower specced consoles, and no one will be able to figure out the difference.
