MS is global but xbox is nowhere to be global brand many things need to be worked on and not just subtitles and voiceover
hilarious that the worst naming decisions were prevented for the origin of Xbox itself, which then went on to have naming conventions all over the place since then ![]()
I think Sega has one of the best localizations? Across the world.
Yeah, for example earlier Forza games had Italian voiceover, but since FH3 they didnât include it anymore. And Forza is bigger than ever now.
I have it in the backlog still⌠Is the new expansion worth it?
What are you talking about, when you have business in all continents and ~100 MAUs itâs obviously a global brand, MS is simply bad at localisation, itâs a known issue even in other areas of the company.
Purely in terms of language support, Iâve been checking Sega games on Steam and they also seem to have around 10-11 or so languages per game. With the odd exception here and there, like Football Manager having 17.
I would not play games if it was in my native language, it would just sound dumb. English is easy, versatile and imho it should be the lingua franca to an even greater extent than it is.
I have no problem with no voiceover in my native language, expecially for Forza, but many people donât know english so well and voice dubbing in your native language is a strong signal of support from the publisher/platform holder. Moreover when one of Sony strongest points is localisation. MS Store review section in my country is full of complaints about this thing, yesterday for example I read âPsychonauts 2 is a great game, but why MS never dubs its games in our language other than Halo and Gears?â
Itâs just my opinion, but it would be easier to make English the lingua franca than to localize everything into a gazillion languages. It would also be faster for the ones complaining to learn English than wait for everyting to be localized ![]()
You donât need some sort of Oxford degree in English literature to understand basic stuff like video games.
Again, this is just my personal opinion.
I would agree if Nintendo, a notoriously backwards company, wasnât doing a better job than Microsoft, top 5 Fortune brand since forever, at localisation, thatâs it.
Yeah we are not completely in disagreement on this. The reality is that people are lazy so localizations have to be made, and MS should be better at it, especially considering their size and global reach.
In the very least subtitles should be available for a lot of languages, since it is also a good way to learn and getting better at English.
Yep, as I said I donât demand voiceover in 10 languages for every game, but at least 10 subtitles/UI languages yeah, that I demand for any XGS game, having less languages than some indie games is a terrible look.
sounds extremely privileged to me lmao
Yep, agreed.
In what way? Voice-overs and dubs are usually plagued by less than optimal audio, not always great VAâs, terrible lip sync etc.
As for English, I like it and it is the easiest language Iâve studied.
I donât have a Switch so I donât know the latest, but how much is really involved in a Nintendo translation? I donât recall their games being heavy on dialog or voice work.
I always found it odd how the west is always in a hurry to censor lewd stuff but gratuitous ultra violence is just fine. Not that I donât enjoy violent games, but its just crazy to me that a bouncing breast or two is somehow âworseâ than a bloody chainsaw death complete with entrails flying everywhere.
just hearing that localization is made because people are lazy to learn english is quite a take lol
sure, but itâs the people who speak those languages who decide the quality of the localization work. Wouldnât affect the english/default versionâs experience. Xbox just needs to invest money in making the experience better for more cultures and languages around the world, especially if theyâre about that inclusive vision.
I just absolutely donât know how arguments for Xbox doing better globally are made in this forum but then sideline or donât recognize the importance of localization to truly be a global brand.
Me too, but it still matters that other languages get more support.
