Finally finished it. Put it down 6 months ago, and only just did the last few missions.
Huge, gorgeous, impeccable sound, the robots are the stars, just as in the first.
Otherwise though, I found it fairly uninteresting. Exploring the world was my main draw. The story wasn’t, nor are the characters. Aloy is unrelentingly earnest, and unrelentingly talkative, to aid the player. It’s sometimes useful, more irritating. The game lacked the first game’s ‘nadir of evil’ vibe that I enjoyed. Zenith and co weren’t that interesting. The companions weren’t either. My main criticism of story/narrative was how the different tribes and peoples felt not like new tribes far in the future, but a bunch of cosplaying Californians - they’re barely any different in any really substantial way. There’s lore and costume and all that, sure, but it doesn’t feel different. It feels incredibly conservative, as does much of the rest of the game. Nothing in the side quests or these peoples felt radically different, in terms of gameplay or ‘culture’. I think language is key here: they all sound and speak like people from their part of the world. Their language is nearly identical, minus modern slang. Their conceptualisations of the world aside from their various religions/cults, feel basically the same as ours in the day to day. But this is a remade world. This is Earth Redux…
Still, it is bloody gorgeous, and I can imagine playing on hard would make the survival/skills/crafting/combat elements shine. The latter was fun, the former an irritation more than anything engaging, on medium difficulty. The skills felt mostly superfluous, outside of a few key ones. I used only two types of overcharge things in the entire game.

Enjoyed this one more than most puzzle platformers. Can be mildly frustrating occasionally. But it never gets overly complicated.

Some great picks, Neverwinter Nights (the original) I think was my first Bioware game, loved it - while Mafia: The Old Country and The Forgotten City are both among my favourite games

What a crazy game and great story. Might dip into some post game achievements but that’s FFXV, AC Valhalla, Starfield and this cleared this year. Happy with that dent into backlog so anything else this year a bonus with GTA coming.
