For me the only reason I watch is for the FPS/Frame Times because those are issues that can affect me and if a game has them. It’s always possible that VRR isn’t going to do much depending on how bad it is, but DF isn’t the only one doing them anymore and sometimes they don’t cover the games I want.
I watch Maurice from The Game Tester channel. He tells me everything I need to know. He tests on every platform. He is also consistent, pretty neutral, most of the time, as he rarely do click bait videos.
He also tests many many smaller games that don’t get any attention nowadays. Even doing hardware and big updates like this video on Expedition 33 last big update.
He also do Series S, for those interested.
This guy do also some testing on all platforms.
Of course, they are small channels that don’t look too fancy, but they are doing amazing work.
Just subbed to the channel, Youtube is having some issues lately though and there are I reloaded like 10 times and the video player doesn’t work.
HDR game testing is what we definitely need more of. There’s only like what…one? Gaming Tech, and that’s it , if I’m not mistaken.
I think there is someone that has a tool to measure HDR on resetera and even shared their work here. But I don’t think it got a lot of attention.
HDR is also, while an important asoects if games, one that will vary on what people thinks looks good.
A good example is, ESO, that has 2 HDR modes: the default version that uses the games original color grading and the vivid version that uses a more color color grading.
I don’t like the defualt and change the values for vivid to how I like it. But I have seen people online say that vivid has too much contrast and they prefer the defualt.
Which just shows how different everyone views HDR.
Oh that’s interesting, not many games have different HDR modes. My beef with HDR to this day is when the implementation is broken which makes the game look washed out, inky black areas are grey and really ruining the picture. It seems to happen less nowadays but it still does happen and then you have to disable it on system level again because most games just don’t offer a HDR on/off slider sadly.
But when done well, HDR can be awesome.
I hate to be forced to defend DF, but I thought the context was pretty clear that the “slow year” comment was in the context of industry defining visuals. Considering the whole video was about “graphics of the year”. Oliver even blatantly says “yeah, slighly slower year in terms of high profile graphically stunning game releases”. Not “no games came out this year”. They are focusing pretty clearly on games that were doing something special or different visually from a technology standpoint.
And sure you can point to alex’s comment, but what he said barely came out as a coherent sentence. It even looks like he is holding in a laugh because of how bad he fumbled it.
Like, dont get me wrong, Im fully on board that DF generally sucks.
Possibly someone named Boris (EvilBoris)?
‘industry defining’ is subjective for the last 15 years, really. Animation fidelity is cool but leads to gameplay being meh. We’ve become used to how amazing things look but the world interactivity in AC: Shadows is flipping incredible to anyone that’s seen it. DOOM TDA looks miles better than Eternal.
Once you’ve done something for long enough the rose-tinted nostalgia glasses make you become jaded almost 100% of the time. I’d take issue with their statement because they’re too online
Online discourse is always so negative that it definitely rubs off on everything.
Surprised no one talked about how AC technically beat Yotei in their opinion.
I agree with you overall.
In the end it is their video and “industry defining” to them, in their video, is whatever they want it to be. It only carries the weight someone chooses to give it.
That’s the one!
They talking about Metroid 4 in this video. What is this thing doing differently or special on the graphics side? Awful texture filtering?
Again. It is their video. They are free to say whatever they want. It’s subjective, there is no right answer.
They are also pretty clear why they mention it, atmosphere and performance. It runs at 60 on switch 1 and 4k/60 or 1080/120 locked on switch 2. That’s just as good of reason to mention it as any.
I could tell you CloverPit has the best graphics of the year because it looks like a PS1 game.
Switch 2:
-
Switch 2 can show some dithered shadows similar to PS4 in some places, though
-
No issues noted with texture streaming or low resolution assets like PS4 in the Switch 2 version
-
CG FMV quality at the start of the demo is compressed compared to PS5, though most cut-scenes in the full game are real time so this wouldn’t be an issue elsewhere.
-
Switch 2, in terms of image quality, looks different from any other console version
-
All console versions have used UE4 TAA but Switch 2 can show some unique artifacts like dithering in motion and the hair appearance is also a bit different in terms of how dithering is used
-
A lot of aliasing in motion but very clean and stable results when still.
-
DF thinks it’s using ‘tiny DLSS’
-
Switch 2 docked is 1080p, same as PS4 (PS5 Performance mode is 1512p~)
-
Performance is a locked 30fps with one or two minor stutters, no frame pacing issue seen in demo.
-
Dithering issues also extend to some geometry in the world, the softness makes it look strange. Not necessarily a ‘bad thing’ but looks different and interesting than other versions
-
Switch 2 Portable is up-scaling to 1080p from 720p or lower using DRS
-
Visual settings are mostly very similar with some cuts in shadow quality
-
Some breakup noted in motion, the ‘tiny DLSS’ is being pushed a bit more
-
Performance is 30fps with some more dips compared to docked mode
-
Overall, the Switch 2 handheld results are pretty comparable to the PS4 version
-
‘Arguably one of the best looking games on Switch 2’, DF are wondering how Rebirth will be.
Xbox Series:
-
Series S and X both have Graphics and Performance modes
-
Both do a good job hitting and maintaining 30/60 target in either mode
-
Series X seems to be a visual quality and resolution match for PS5
-
Series S is 1440p in Graphics and 1080p in Performance
-
Switch can appear a bit sharper than Series S when standing still, in the Tiny DLSS vs TAA comparison
True. Having Dolby Vision on the Series X can make quite a huge difference IMO. But all of this requires people to actually have an open mind and not just set up a console (wrongly) on their respective TV and declare the game’s visuals better because “plastic box allegiance”.
I might come across as a bit salty here because I really am, i.e. I recently got a PS5 and immediately downloaded Silent Hill 2 Remake via PS Plus. Then yesterday I bought the game outright for my Series X and immediately in the forest area (in Quality mode) the difference in image quality in favor of the Xbox version is very noticeable. So in light of this I find the recent Digital Foundry SH2 Remake video where they focused entirely on the Series S and just tersely dismissed the Series X version like an afterthought to be borderline dereliction of duty if their ‘duty’ is to inform buyers about the technical aspects of games running on respective hardware.
DF have been terrible for ages. Now that they are independent they’ll bash Xbox for all its worth and look to praise Sony and Nintendo for their likes and subscribers
I just realized the demo is on Xbox PC. Anyone tried it on Ally X?
Absolutely no difference between Xbox Series X version and PS5 version. It’s a match.
But it’s crazy what Switch 2 can pull off with this game on handheld and docked.
