Indeed. Its clear to me that many are simply invested in the internet console wars. A re-release of Quake is what it is and the ONLY advantage in keeping that from Switch or PS5 is for those who want to go on social media and use it to score points.
In reality it makes absolutely no difference to an Xbox owner or a potential Xbox owner. Full stop.
Quake 1 was ported to multiple consoles back then (N64, Saturn⌠Psone too, but ended up cancelled, but you could find the unfinished port if you owned a pirated console)
And Quake 2 was the same.
Itâs like the perfect example of what Phil meant by legacy titles.
I want to see ppl walk the talk. I want to see how many will play the Quake or even Quake 2 with remasters. Getting distressed over the original Quake being remastered for all consoles is quite all right as a reaction, and I understand.
But unless, we actually play these remasters, we are no better than the blue fanbois who are only on twitter.
Also, I doubt Quake 3 Arena will be remade, instead, I think, we will have the new Quake reboot only for Xbox/PC.
It has nothing to do with being tribal, in an ideal world, exlcusives wouldnt exist but thats not reality
The more xbox games that release on non xbox platforms, the more reason people dont have to bother with xbox platforms and the more they can say to themselves, âwell that Bethesda game has come to Playstation, so that other one has a chance too, iâll just stick to Playstationâ
Why feed into that for a few extra copies sold? and before people give me the âyeah but gamepassâ, gamepass is awesome but its exclusive content that brings people in, theres a reason youâll be seeing a billion Star Wars and Marvel shows on Disney+ and not on Netflix or Amazon
Or it can be looked the other way around. They are using a game that was already released elsewhere and wouldnât add anything to xbox by being exclusive to generate excitement for the series and when they announce the sequel/reboot that will surely be exclusive the impact is bigger.
Iâm not arguing against Microsoft making exclusive content. And I wouldâve understood it too if the Quake Remaster wouldâve been exclusive to Xbox/PC. But, I donât think a remaster of a 25 year old game is going to move the needle much in regards of getting people into the ecosystem.
If this is something Zenimax wanted to do for their old Nintendo/PlayStation users, then so be it. Itâs not enough of a big deal to get upset about. In the end itâs about the content, which Xbox and PC users are getting.
Microsoft needs exclusive content for their subscription service growth. It needs Halo. It needs Starfield. But just like MLB The Show isnât the biggest game of the year, a Quake Remaster isnât either. And having it available on Game Pass while having to pay for it on other platforms means Xbox fans are getting something out of the Zenimax buyout.
If at this point you still need to be reassured that you made the right choice by buying an Xbox or a PC, then I donât know what to say. Microsoft is going to provide content.
Because it doesnât matter. Nobody, I repeat nobody is sitting there weighing up whether to invest in an Xbox and thinking about Bethesda games. It just isnât reality. The internet makes you think it is because its all console wars. Youâve had years of âI donât need an Xbox because their games on are PCâ, spoiler alert: every single person posting that was never intending to buy one and half of them donât have a PC either. Its just the nonsense online console warrior stuff that is the only thing anyone is feeding off when getting upset about a 25 year old game being released again cross-platform.
The vast majority of people wonât even know what is an isnât a game under the Bethesda umbrella and care even less. And when exclusives like Starfield hit - they will either want to play them or not.
I mean im not upset, I have an xbox and gamepass and will enjoy playing it there, I just think itâs an extremely pointless thing to do for what will at best lead to some extra sales, how thatâs worth people potentially skipping your ecosystem because theyâll assume their other content will be multiplatform iâll never know
Sure, I doubt there would be very many people that would set out to buy an xbox over a ps5 because of a 25 year old quake port, thatâs not the point
As usual MS messaging comes back to bite them as it does far too often
