NVIDIA Share Details of DLSS 5

This could actually mean that it would likely be a GeForce Now exclusive, since that would be the only way for anyone interested to use it until it can be used on GPU’s that aren’t as good.

You dont need two 5090’s for it. They ran the demo on two because the model is still early and they wanted to demo it worry free. They clearly stated that it is running on single cards in their lab.

That said, they should put this right in the bin because it looks like complete trash.

Yeah, the use of 2 seems to be to get as smooth an experience as possible. But DLSS5 AI model is having trouble recognizing shadows even with that much compute. So it does something like extend a nose to match the shadow.

Just the thought of playing all of Resident Evil Requiem with that kind of technology give me shivers…

Imagine the zombies or certain enemies from later in the game.

Everyone and their dog who’s tried using AI to upscale and ‘enhance’ old photos or low resolution videos knows it gets creative with face details and adds stuff that shouldn’t be there. And it also lacks consistency with the same person’s face changing from frame-to-frame.

We also have plenty of examples of AI upscaling butchering actual real Hollywood movies (True Lies 4K being a highly egregious example) so anyone who thinks this is suddenly going to get better by iterating could be barking up the wrong tree, i.e. it was lame tech 5 years ago and remains so today - even when applied in real time to video games.

Considering it’s trying to recreate realistic looking faces, I wonder what it would turn missing flesh into. A skin condition? Wrinkles? Or an odd looking shadow?

DF received death threats over their video.

I mean…..

That’s going too far and unfortunately it’s something the gaming community does often.

This is what’s new

Developers Were Left in the Dark About DLSS 5

Speaking with developers and artists at studios that have agreed to DLSS 5, including CAPCOM and Ubisoft, Insider Gaming was told that the DLSS 5 tech was revealed to them at the same time as everyone else.

“We found out at the same time as the public,” said one Ubisoft developer.

Developers at CAPCOM tell Insider Gaming that the announcement and the publisher’s involvement were particularly shocking, as CAPCOM has previously been historically very “anti-AI” with projects such as Resident Evil Requiem and other unannounced projects in development. Some at the publisher fear that the DLSS 5 announcement could prompt a change in the publisher’s view on generative AI and its implementation in its games.

Isn’t that the problem. It’s actually generating things that aren’t there. although I do wonder now that Neural rendering is possible will they even ever need to get to a place where they need DLSS5.

Of course yes, it’s THE problem with the tech. Much in the same way it gave Arnold Schwarzenegger wrinkles that didn’t exist in True Lies. It’s the same upscaling with ‘creative enhancement’ philosophy going on here, just repackaged for video games.

The funniest part to me is how a many execs and their cheerleaders sat down and watched the clips whilst salivating about how cool it all is. Meanwhile people who actually like art and understand it were thinking “nah, this isn’t it”.

I’ve mentioned this problem before but I’ll say it again: one of THE primary issues with creative fields in entertainment (games, movies, others) is the corporate people and techie folks have zero background or credentials in art. It means I’d like to see Jensen Huang’s art grades please. Yes he’s a brilliant mathematician and businessman. Hooray for him. But let me see whether he knows what shape, form and character design theories are in art. He can’t. So when he looks at AI enhanced Grace in RE Requiem he’s thinking “URGHH GREAT” because he has no idea what he’s looking at.

In this business, tech people should only serve artists and not vice versa. This tech is the tail wagging the dog and it’s not good.

DLSS itself is a form of AI/ML upscaling but it’s a specific, narrow, dedicated use that uses game frame data and doesn’t rely on a general library like AI slop, that’s why it’s been incredible, but then they introduce this general AI slop looking feature for whatever reason…

Oh wow. These folks should be ashamed for such insanely idiotic and honestly pathetic behavior.

In some videos I really like the lighting such as in Hogwarts Legacy, but it doesn’t really look all that great for Oblivion and AC to me. Photo realistic? Yes. Especially so AC. But do these games need to look photo realistic? Not for me, not at all.

Same with the faces, I have a hard time adjusting to this.

Saw the DF apology tour video last night. That was pandering turned up to 11. The first dlss5 video was full of excitement and wonder. Last nights was like they were at a funeral.

It comes across like they realized they missed out on some internet outrage and pivoted as hard as they could so they can lead the charge.

Making rotten flesh more realistic will look digusting. We’ve got people leaving movie theaters, being disgusted by gross scenes, and now we will get people uninstall games.

That’s why wanting more realistic looking games has limits, every artist knows that.

If you played RE Requiem, you know that it’s not just zombies, there’s other classic RE enemies that are disgusting in that game. One encounter especially made my skin crawl. I don’t want that thing to look more realistic. I know some people will want to play that, but I don’t want PTSD from games, some are already convincing enough.

Since being independent they have been more controversial and weird somehow

The thing is, in a vacuum, when you see this technology as some kind of optional expensive mod, like the popular EMB mods for GTA V and Cyberpunk 2077, I can get that people can get excited. Although, we know what is going on in the industry and that it will be pushed heavily as the way forward and that’s what is annoying. We know NVidia will push this thing down everyone throat, just like every other version of DLSS. And then game will stop being optimized, relying on GenAI entirely.

The way how they didn’t tell devs before showing this is telling. They want everyone to get on board with this as if there’s no other options.
