This is crazy and unexpected. I assume they expect third parties to pick up the disk printing and Sony will just sell you a separate disk drive.
If and a massive if Helix is what many of us thinking of in the best possible way, minus the cost, that will be my one and only console next gen.

Today everyone is talking big about how Sony lost their business and they’ll never buy a PlayStation game again. Tomorrow, when tempers cool down, they’re going to need to think up ways to blame all of this on Rockstar and/or Xbox, and probably start talking about how they never liked physical games anyway and really this is a smart move by Cerny.

I think this decision was mostly based on the production capacity of Blu&Ray discs and readers. Basically the manufacturers have to pay more now as those technologies are licenced per device and fees got more expensive, and even with 20-30% physical the return isn’t worth it anymore

My main problem with this is Sony’s digital space is rather simple: get it and play on one console or to another. Xbox has already advertised multiple devices, so that feels like rewarding, regardless behind the scene (likely next week). I get that PS6 is hinting a handheld one but that’s essentially buying another piece. That’s a lot of money. My PC is ready. Just need my big screen TV to be fulfilled.
It still weird that they didn’t try higher price for discs before cutting all first

True. I think they are preparing for layoff/cuts since they have their division in that regard. What I want to know is what good does it do to announce it so far away. Maybe GTAVI sales should be higher than now, so they’re like “let’s tell them physical sales is dead, so they can buy more GTA aka not my exclusive title.”
Funny. When this news came in the first time, it didn’t receive well because it will kill physical. Now that we know it will thanks to PS (go figure), this is actually a blessing.

Sad times. Long gone are the days of getting a physical game with a detailed manual with artwork and a map. Game releases were a thing when you had to go outside to buy them.
Digital only let’s them control pricing even more. PS already got into trouble doing this. I’m glad for play anywhere as if helix is dropping multi store fronts I think its the end of consoles for me. They offer nothing unique anymore such as a low entry point or exclusive content.

Probably the tech wasn’t there at the time.
I remember this was speculated when they found a symbol for it. Still makes me wonder how that will work for someone who may decide to sell their copy.

Without free cloud saves you can’t even easily take your PS purchases to another PS console. Especially if they want to do a handheld, they really need to figure that all out ASAP.
