I want to be excited for Onimusha but what’s with the washed out look? Deep contrast is really lacking here. The grey black levels really stand out and making it look washed out. Not sure why they are going with this.

But there’s a demo now, I assume on Xbox too and maybe it’s not washed out and then it would mean something is off with their video.

Wolverine and God of War just looked very by-the-numbers to me, nothing to get excited about and not even graphically mindblowing or anything. Control looked awesome and maybe Tomb Raider, other than that I struggled not to be bored.

I’ll give my review soon, but I heard Phantom Blade is coming October 29 now. That takes guts.

Just got out of an all-day work meeting, is it worth rewatching the show? Or are there only a few trailers to that really matters?

Looked up God of war. That’s an interesting and risky one to me. Especially since it’s not a prequel. Faye’s death is a pillar of the story of 2018 (one of the few games I platinum trophied; still haven’t played Ragnorak). I feel like they’d need to do something big to justify it, but they also can’t let it spiral out of control. The article I read mentioned a cosmic cube and nexus for mythologies… what??

I thought it was a good show.

Wolverine, God of War, Phantom Blade, The Lost World, Tomb Raider, Rayman looks great.

I also appreciated how slick everything looks and feels when it’s PlayStation, no advertisement for the competition.

Why? I ask as someone who doesn’t own a PS5. No advertisement for the competition (platforms I actually own) just tells me not to watch the show for even the third party games. But to me a showcase is a massive opportunity to build excitement for future sales of your platform to new gamers. I have no excitement from something I had no reason to watch. Is it different if you own a PS5 and are keeping up with Sony? Though also to me those gamers aren’t so fragile and willing to leave over logos. That also kinda means the showcase is only really for people who are already Playstation customers which feels like Playstation in that it’s protective but not focused on growth and reaching new audiences .

Totally agree. It was a decent show for someone like me who doesn’t own a PS5 and I was there for the multiplatform games, we got release dates for some titles that I want to play (like Onimusha, Control, Tomb Raider e.t.c.) which I guess is a good thing. Also besides Rayman Legends Retold which looks awesome I can’t say that this show had any other new and exciting announcements for me.

Now about Wolverine and Laufey…I didn’t like the look of both games art direction wise and both looked so I dunno uninspired and safe? also WTF was that ridiculous jelly cube/blob shit? oh man…If anything both of those games made even more apparent that Sony as a 1st party publisher is not for me anymore. I think that I am pretty sure now that I won’t get a Playstation this generation. :man_shrugging:

As Sik said in the reaction stream (that I sadly watched after the show ended) I am not sure that this was a show worthy of selling movie tickets for, I guess for a SoP it was better than usual but that’s not a high bar.

Wolverine: It’s kind of odd how much blood is in the game but it disappears off Wolverine quickly, also his suit oddly regenerates like it is part of his healing factor. It doesn’t seem like there is much “Wolverine” to the game, just more hack and slash that could be any character.

God of War looks good, just more GOW I guess.

It seems like there was a real focus on action and spectacle games and in that sense it was pretty sad if that is all they got. There wasn’t anything “wow” presented here, and the show would have been better served to have a better mix of games IMO. A real win for those who like to slash and stab things though.

This is what I saw on the game spot article and it makes me kinda concerned they’re shark jumping with GOW. Will need to see what the story actually is when it comes out.

The description goes on: “To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods–the Everywhen–where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic. Harness Faye’s speed, control, and relentlessness to overwhelm even the fiercest of foes with decisive, deadly precision.”

I feel like a prequel where we’re more grounded in Norse mythology with an experienced veteran setting up the events of the first PS4 game would’ve been better. It could have ended with Faye fighting Kratos in their first encounter.

I thought the State of Play was good. I give it a 8/10. I’m excited to buy Wolverine. I’m intrigued by the Marvel Tolkien game. Mom of War look good. I still have a lot of Sony’s 1st part I need to beat before my PlayStation Premium ends in September. I’m excited by all the Play Anywhere titles that were announced! I’m shocked by all the games coming out in September!! Gears of War E-Day & Minecraft Dungeons 2 will have to squeeze in.

For me, it’s Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered

State of Play - Better Side of Summer Game Fest Featuring Sony’s First Party Titles

I have seen either people liked it or really hated it. Geoff doesn’t do poll anymore, but I have seen that have B,C, and D equal each other out. That said I don’t think it was a bad show, but this wasn’t a theater worth of extravaganza.

There are plenty of titles showcased here and many of them looked pretty neat. We also have release dates for many as well, although it became hysterical to see September release game after game. Looking at the list, SH: TownFall has a strong chance to get TitanFall 2 effect and that sucks. There were very few new announced titles with one making a return after many years, Stuntman. New look at the already announced title looks good too. So, what’s the problem?

For starters, there were many announced titles making another round here and it felt like we hit the point of just wanting to play the game. I believe SoP from February took many of newfound sensation away such as new Castlevania, new DOA, and more. Speaking of which, I gave February show a pass as it was treated as SoP and not like a Showcase, which this one was definitely the case. That being said I was hoping for more first party titles, yet I only got more third party titles. In other words, they carried the show heavily once again.

It is why I felt like this is more of Summer Games Fest than a Sony show. It just so happens that Sony took some that was available from them and now I wonder if Geoff’s show is better stacked or got stolen. I don’t know what Xbox Showcase will have, but looking at the track record, you can always count on at least 6 first party studios to have something. Speaking of which, I want to talk about them.

I have to check on the reactions from social and although I didn’t dive in too deep, I don’t feel alone on feeling underwhelmed. I am sure the game will be solid, but I am surprisingly burnt out of Sony’s trademark of cinematic cutscene. The gameplay will be fun, but it is not like coming from Uncharted Saga to The Last of Us as in how much different the vibe, sensation, and game feel. It really feels like Spider-Man minus open world and now gore. Oddly enough, it won’t be the goriest release in 2026 knowing Gears will highly likely overshadow it.

Tokon is more fighters reveal. Simple. Marathon being shown again is meant as a good thing like how Xbox’s successful live service get their spotlight and that’s fine. The only problem is the game isn’t exactly lighting on fire at this time. Worst, the Season 2 launch, according to Tom, has been a disaster. I know Sony wants that shine, but they are really in a dire situation in live service area.

Until Dawn 2 is a bit strange and concerning. It’s neat for the game to have a sequel. It’s just the timing could be against them big time. It became clear the movie and the remastered were meant to give a strong push as well as to see interest. Researching them quickly, they don’t bud well to their data. Sure, they made some back with the movie, but you look at Backrooms, the franchise is nowhere near to have that pull.

It’s also only coming to PS5. I understand PC didn’t do well, but this is only going to be even harder to do well. Not to mention, in my opinion, Until Dawn original was released at a better time, where the gameplay was fresh at the time. The original developer has been producing this type of game for years now, including The Quarry, which is practically a sequel. Firesprite is working on it and I can’t help but feel they are going to take more damage than good by the end. I hope to be wrong and I wish them the best.

GOW looks solid. I wish the cutscene didn’t go that long, but again, vintage Sony. At least it made sense on why it was at the theater. Take that as you will.

I can see why some people really don’t like it, but so as who does. For me, it was fine. I saw it as a show to see when they are released and was hoping for more games, but it is what it is.

I guess you can say the showcase didn’t cure the fan base.

I’m not a God of War fan, so I went into this trailer with no preconceptions… A new protagonist would be a good opportunity to jump in, and I like Deborah Ann Woll. But I don’t know man, whatever that was, it was not for me. A gelatinous cube and talking sword with quippy comic relief sidekick energy, purple magic going off everywhere like it’s Dragon Age Veilguard… Everything in that demo seemed like someone’s idea of what gamers liked a few years ago, and now it just felt stale. Even the mocap and cinematic cutscenes were a step down from what Naughty Dog was doing years ago.

The concept is fine, like there’s a version of this game that I would have been pumped to see. But that was not it.

Wait do we have a date for dungeons 2?

It sounds really MCU to me which is actually worrying

Whats worse is that if Destiny 3 would’ve been there it would have just been a hastily thrown together CGI trailer. Destiny fans are just going to have to swallow a very bitter pill and hope for the best.

I can’t believe the Ori team made No Rest for the Wicked. I really hate to say this because I know how much hard work that went into it, but it looks really generic. Wolverine and God War look really flat. Are these unreal games or custom engine? These do not look like first party tent pole games. Seeing those two games remind me of seeing Halo Infinite gameplay for the first time. It just looked disappointing. I’m shocked this is what sony first party is now. There is a sameness that’s hard to fathom coming from sony first party.

Out of the 20 games shown, 6 of them are on my list. 30%.

  • Marvel’s Wolverine (looks bloody and gory, im in!! lol)
  • God of War: Laufey (I can deal with the ribbons on the sword talking but what the hell is with a jello like cube companion? Ugh. All this stupid weird ass shit. SMH)
  • Dune: Awakening (Game Pass Ultimate day one baby!!! And fuck those who want to sacrifice day one games on Game Pass…they can go to PlayStation and pay full price)
  • No Rest For The Wicked (been waiting for this game, seems like it’s PlayStation 5 and PC first for the full 1.0 release followed by Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2 which is fine by me as I wouldn’t mind seeing this game slip to 2027 for Xbox as that’s better for me personally)
  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword (looks awesome, hoping the combat/difficulty isn’t souls like and im happy that there’s a playable demo…will download it this weekend)
  • Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis (looks awesome and February 2027 is starting to get packed)

On a related note, I was expecting this State of Play to be one of Sony’s best shows this generation but watching through it when I got from work, I was like, this isn’t giving me much that I want and where the hell was Kena 2? I’m expecting it to get delayed to 2027 because I don’t see where this game could release and not be overshadowed/ignored. Oh well.
