GOW & Wolverine looked wonderful & Rayman looked spectacular
Surprised to see a lack of excitement for Wolverine from some comic book nooks. And people are citing frustration with pulling back from PC ports and PS5 increases. It’s an awkward time for showcases and especially exclusive games. The price of console hardware is going up and the price of the games themselves are going up. For people on the outside (not already current gen console owners) it seems like it’ll be especially hard to build excitement.
Nothing that blew me away or interested me more than Fable or Clockwork Revolution. Wolverine and GOW looked decent.
Two new points that should be addressed after some thinking:
There’s a problem of feeling “same” alas fatigue kicking in. I can see why many are beginning to think Sony is “creatively bankrupt.” It also feels like Sony chose games that general audience would “easily” resonate and when the small titles do come, they are discussed like Nintendo Direct would do.
By the way, does anyone realized how Sony more or less saying everyone is beneath them as their first party titles are in the beginning and the end. Nintendo and Xbox spread them out, so everyone is equal. I thought it’s worth pointing out.
The second point is this show basically helped out majority of games releasing this year. Therefore, many people would be pretty cool to see more titles of next year. Case in point, Xbox and even SGF have a huge advantage to showcase something hype and fresh, instead of titles we already have seen many times like how 007 was everywhere, albeit a great title in the end. Only time will tell.
Very much felt this with Wolverine and GOW. One-two punch of sauceless-ness. To the point that I’m wondering, am I finally becoming old and cynical or did both of those games actually look boring?
Still confident in Intergalactic though. Naughty Dog will save us from these Sony doldrums.
As a Dragon Age Veilguard enjoyer I feel offended, I chose green magic thank you, I went all in on the necrotic energy.
The magic color theme of Dragon Age Inquisition was neon green and that looked freakin’ rad. Purple was so goofy in comparison. Plus there were a couple years there where every game was slathering its art design in purple to look “different.” I thought we were finally over the purple trend. ![]()
That was a 6 - 6.5/10 show.
There is good stuff in it, but most of the show was stuff that has been shown multiple times before. The newer stuff that was shown was…fine. At best.
That sony style of game, ie. 2 minutes of gameplay in a 20 minute segment (GoW), just doesnt do anything for me anymore.
This 100%.
Sony’s games are simply formulaic. Just like Ubisoft had to change and did (but still eventually ended up in the same spot), Sony has to change their formula.
People said the ribbons on the sword GOW is basically the head in GOW/Ragnarok and the cube is Atreaus. lol
Sony has an obsession with their formula and always having a companion with you. Why can’t it just be normal and no companions? Ugh. Oh well. It is what it is.
Dragon Age Veilguard was my 2024 game of the year. I loved the game. So damn good in my opinion.
Ghost of Yotei - exploring majestic Japanese landscapes alone and in silence. ![]()
I like companion characters generally. Just not Jack Quaid as a comic relief gelatinous cube. Not sure how that one got off the drawing board.
The live stream didn’t do it justice. The lighting is still weird to me, but watching it in better quality more closely there’s some impressive details like the blood splatters in the back of the truck at the beginning. The combat felt fast, visceral (litteraly) and reactive to the environment in many ways.
But it’s also a very safe demo of a kind of game we’ve already seen many times: few minutes of gameplay and the rest is cinematics or gameplay you have minimal control on. At the end of the day, it feels like a very safe action game.
I haven’t played God of War since 3, but Laufey caught my interest more than 2018 or Ragnarok did. Still not enough to buy a PlayStation, but maybe in 10 years or so. Also, not to be combative, but complaining about the color of magic is childish. It looked fine (better than fine even).
I was also wondering how the hell this idea/“character” made it into the game…I still can’t believe that this is a thing. ![]()
Totally agree, there was nothing exciting about this gameplay. It was nowhere near a system seller for me and even if I had a PS5 there’s no way I’d pay 70-80 euros for this. ![]()
True. For the most part, you’re alone in Yotei even though there’s too many missions where you’re with someone which is annoying.
I did enjoy Yotei and but prefer Tsushima.
This is going to be pretty petty and nitpicky from me, and I acknowledge that, while wolverine looked solid overall. I was really bothered by the disappearing blood and magical healing suit.
Yeah, I have seen many of them saying the same.
I dont know if the blood disappearing from the suit just needs to be slower/more subtle or what. But having the suit torn apart and cutting to the next camera angle and it being completely intact is just weird. Particularly from a sony first party group heralded for attention to deatil.
To me the problem with wolverine was how generic it looked. I wish they would have made the renderer have some sort of comic book shader effect or something. I was completely shocked how generic and flat it looked.
From what I saw it looked like every other Superhero action game with more blood. Not super excited for that.
