The Game Awards 2023 |

Is there any way to save or find the recordings of old Twitter Spaces? I want to find the one where Keighley dismissed FH5 as “just a racing game” when explaining that it didn’t miss any deadlines and was not nominated for Game of the Year.

It was recorded but TGA’s for 2021.

He said that?

Yeah I was there listening in. I keep bringing it up on Twitter and no one else has mentioned it. So I’d like to bring up the recording.

Not sure Twitter allowed recording of spaces at that time, even now most spaces hosts don’t choose to record them

I also remember him admitting that there’s bias towards single player story games but I can’t find a record of it

Was it part of this podcast by chance?

The nominations are chosen by games media people. The types who prefer PlayStation games, don’t know or care what’s going on with Xbox, and have no freaking clue about GAAS/ongoing games. Thus the nominations we got.

I bet most of them don’t even play on not just Xbox but also PC, they’re limited to just whatever is on PS and Nintendo. How Counter Strike isn’t brought up in community and ongoing, despite that it’s constantly the most played game on Steam with 1m+ players daily, or Valorant or LoL… I bet my everything that if BG3 and AW2 weren’t on PS5 they wouldn’t be getting all these noms :person_shrugging:

I’m looking at the episode previews and I don’t think so because it was a Twitter space that he hosted (or the VGA account but I think it was his) and there were a ton of people in it like games journalists and all that and different people could chime in.

Exactly this is not even a corrupt situation it’s simply a bad system, when you have reviewers that always pick the PlayStation as the review option. How can you expect them to nominate something they aren’t even aware of. This is why the blame falls on Keighley as he is the one that picked these outlets.

Ignoring the platform bias, the strategy/simulation category shows that the panel lacks any sort of expertise on those genres. 3 extremelly accessible but very dull Nintendo titles and 2 undercooked games from known franchises.

Jagged Alliance 3 and Age of Wonders 4 got snubbed big time.

Mainstream gaming media are ill-equiped to talk about large areas of the medium, which is apparent whenever you tune into any of their podcast (referring to very popular strategy games as “obscure” etc.).

True this just makes it clear the majority of the gaming media don’t even understand gaming. No research done on anything just feels like someone went to twitter and picked up the bits there. Other than DF I don’t know if we can even talk about expertise. Clearly the developers I think are best suited for maybe reviewing and judging.

I might skip this year, but I usually have a watch party with some online friends, so I might watch the event.

I think Geoff needs to reevaluate the whole award nominations for this show. I would cut out some of the esports stuff because the majority of the audience doesn’t care. Then he should get more specific about certain awards. For example, there should be a category for best male and female performance.

Then they should also have a category for best supporting character/voice actor. I would also like them to give shoutouts to the actual person that is head of a team. I would like them to include the contributors’ name for categories best narrative, sound design, and other behind the scene stuff. I think it’s silly he doesn’t recognize those people with the technical/behind the scene nominations. Also, I wouldn’t mind for these categories to have a different panel because I don’t trust actual video game journalist to have a proper opinion on this stuff because it’s not their expertise.

Then for the games themselves, there should be categories like best DLC, remake/remaster, new IP, and they need to actually properly filter which games are best indies, action, and RPG. I felt this year might be one of the worst years for what they’ve considered RPGs, action, and indie games.

Lastly, they need to have the show in January because if a game misses the cut. Then there’s no chance of the game showing up the following year. It’s insane a game like Chained Echoes and Pentiment didn’t get nominated for any categories due to not making the dumb November cutoff date

Anyway, these are a few things I would add to make the show more prestigious because at the moment it’s just a mainstream event for advertising games for the holiday season to influence purchases

The only problem with the remake category is, were there enough this year? We had RE4R and DS Remake, don’t they at least need 5 to pick from?

Quake 2 is another.

This will be the first time I don’t watch the Keighley Awards. I will just be watching the developer posted YouTube video of new game announcements.

I don’t watch it. My lady usually watch a streamer that watches whenever she’s bored, so I rely on her reaction on trailer or two to get me checking out. Been like this for a while, so no difference here.

Metal Gear

Red Dead Redemption

Metroi Prime

Super Mario RPG ( but would miss deadline by a week)

System Shock

Like a Dragon Ishin

Front Mission

Advance Wars

I am probably missing some others

I think of the ones I listed I could easily see a list of 5 that would be

Resident evil

Dead Space

Like a Dragon Ishin

Metroid Prime

System Shock

Advance War would probably replace Ishin in my list above

These are all good ideas but would mean the show would be serious like the Baftas, Dice Awards, … and not a 4 hour long advertisement. Geoff has to make his cut and I don’t even fault him for that.

Yeah, at the moment this event is more like the MTV movie awards rather than the Oscars. I think he needs to accept that because until he does the above. Then a lot of this doesn’t matter if he’s trying to make it prestigious. I feel the show does a poor job of actually recognizing key people involved in these games.
