The Game Awards 2023 |

Man, I just remembered that @DeoGame was there last night!

Tell us about it, what was it like?

Broken clock and all that…

I thought the joke was pretty harmless tbh but it sucks that devs were offended.

Honestly I personally care more about reveals and announcements than awards so I thought the show was fine, but upon further reflection, with what a tough year it’s been for layoffs, it would have been cool for the show to make a special effort to showcase devs this year and allow them to grab the spotlight. A missed opportunity.

I guess you just have to think about how you’d feel turning a game around in 18 months just to have a peer (not a comedian/host like other award shows) get on stage and crack jokes.

That’s fair. It probably would have been the right decision to just say no jokes at developers’ expense tonight, no matter how mild.

I had a good time!

The show itself was pretty much the same as what you saw, but I was let in on some secrets a bit early (Heilung!).

The crowd was very energized. I wish I was that animated irl.

I got to meet Dinga after. Lovely guy! Went looking for Phil and Sarah but no luck.

This was one of those rare occasions where staying up for this would have been worth it.

Because today one of my buddies almost spoiled Monster Hunter for me. So glad I did not check out WhatsApp while watching the show, lmao.

That being said, a good night’s rest is more important. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I watched a replay of Jess and Souls stream of the show. Not great, but has been worse. Jess and Soul were excellent as always.

Best moment was easily the live performance of Herald of Darkness which was easily the best part of any game in all of 2023. And it’s such a massive bummer that Jon’s game kept crapping out on him before he could get to that part.

Not going to lie, the meme about SM2 not winning anything is making me laugh.

Best adaptation…

I was so freaking convinced Mario had this in the bag, I even casually said it to my TV screen, lol.

And then it didn’t win.

Ok.

TLOU was good, but it was also overrated, imo.

Mario made a bunch of money but the quality itself was pretty poor. I’m not surprised at all lol.

The quality?

I mean for a Mario movie it was pretty well made.

It started in the cinemas in April and only recently left it here, it’s crazy.

To each their own. Don’t mind at the choice. I do find it funny with that actor from Twisted Metal has that blank face when his show didn’t win.

I’m really sure why gamers care about the game awards.

Everything around gaming just screams amateur baring the actual work that goes into producing the games.

The journalism is amateur just fans with their own bias & leanings, held to no particular standard barring wanting to generate clicks

The fact that open and meta critic are taken serious while some scores from certain outlets being weighted is total nonsense to me.

games like hogwarts legacy get virtually little acknowledgement due author of the book saying something against the grain (don’t agree with her by the way) just shows the gaming media can’t step above it and be impartial. Some outlets giving it a review score 0 only serves to affect its credibility & bring it down even futher.

Then we get the actual awards, it’s just rushed through, the nominations are just a popularity contest and for all the kicking and screaming in the build up they skip over them in seconds.

Until the media side of things matures the credibility in awards and everything else won’t be there

So until then just the trailers & let it be what it is. Not worth getting annoyed with it

I don’t know why you thought Mario would win, TLoU had this in the bag the moment it was announced and is deserved, best live action adaptation of a video game we have so far, by a mile.

The reaction to Hellblade seem pretty flat when viewing online, was it like that live or was it just the producer’s not boosting their crowd mics?

Yeah I thought TLOU was awesome. They knew exactly when to depart from the source material and when to recreate a scene line for line.

The latter

If people still don’t like it then I don’t know wtf Xbox has to do. Hellblade 2 looks great, finally some proper gameplay scenes with combat!
