Xbox Series X - First impressions

I cancelled my preorder because it’s the same colour as the Xbox, Xbox 360 slim, Xbox One and my Xbox One X. Seriously there’s more than black and white Microsoft!

Loading times, max framerates for games with unlocked framerates. And then the stuff the BC team is gonna add on top of that like actual visual enhancements and Sunset Overdrive and GTA 4 for example already have auto HDR.

Will Sony do all that? I doubt that so much.

This isn’t a deal breaker for me, but I am curious if there is a BC mode that disables all enhancements for the original experience.

That said, as much as I’d like to consider myself a purist, playing through Panzer Dragoon Orta and Daytona USA with crisp image quality through superior texture filtering…I don’t think I’d be playing them with original graphics even if it were an option.

My favourite impression so far is the controller, and how it’s weighted slightly differently to be better. The first generation X1 controllers were off in how they were weighted and I preferred the 360 controller. But this was fixed in the subsequent generations. The latest X1 controller is the best 1st party controller IMO. To take it even further in refinement…That’s awesome.

There was something like this in Halo CE Anniversary where you could go back to the original just by a press of a button. Mayber they can do something similar for purists like you

Maybe! The question is how many would use it. I do keep all my old consoles so if I really wanted it, I’ll go back to them. And I’m sure most purists would as well.

And don’t get me wrong, I’m really happy they’re doing all of this. The increased resolutions, the better texture filtering, the HDR implementation, the framerate boosting through DirectML (I assume), this is all great stuff that I’ll most likely love. Again, I played through Panzer Dragoon Orta and compared it to the Xbox original… You can appreciate the artistry that went into the texture work better on the Xbox One because of the cleaner image quality. In Daytona USA, the road is no longer a blurry mess… In many respects it shows off the games in ways the developer wish they could when they made it.

I totally understand your point of view and if devs can do it like what they did with Halo CE Anniversary, it would be cool and maybe made people appreciate even more the work done behind both versions

Just make sure you have a One X, the regular One version still has the poor texture filtering. On the X it’s so beautiful you may cry tears of joy.

Sorry for the off-topic folks!

I imagine the Series S to have the same high quality texture filtering.

I do!

GTA 4 at 60fps and HDR :echidnut: hope the BC team is able to get Rockstar approval for GTA 3 and Vice City.

Monster Hunter at 60fps in resolution mode made me spit my coffee out. Absolutely stunning.

Do they have an embargo on other features like the UI navigation and next gen games?

Can wait to see Ms enabling framerate enhancements and framerate doubling too.

That gears ultimate tech demo showed they can now apply a non integer scaling to resolution, that potentially means every single game can now be adjusted for native 4k (if nothing else breaks and performance allows of course)

There is an option for enhanced 360 games to disable the 3x3 resolution increase. But you can’t disable the better framerate or texture filtering. So an original Xbox experience is out of the question, but this was also never the goal.

Anyone know if Borderlands 3 has a unlocked framerate?

Why did the media fail us by not doing the swingset glitch in GTA 4? :giphy:

did geoff keighley put up an impression?

Don’t know about that, but they did announce a free next-gen upgrade for the game.

Yup. I know they said it will get a series X|S upgrade.
